Retro Design and Renovation; The Beatles Style

Challenging commissions in exciting places are what make us tick here at The Barr Group Companies and the Abbey Road Studios were no exception. The onsite café, which serves artists, staff and visitors alike, was due a revamp. The team at Shaun Clarkson ID were brought on-board to produce a striking retro design, in keeping with the high profile past and the bustling present of the iconic institution.

Flooring, tables, walls, seating, tiling, serving station, bar and even wall art all underwent the Shaun Clarkson ID treatment under the expert eye of Senior Projects Manager ‘Mayo Molnar’. StuartBarrCDR and BarrJoinery were commissioned to carry out the renovation work and bespoke furniture and cabinetry production.

Working at a busy commercial building, whilst it is in full operation, is never a mean feat. Contracts Manager Lawrence Foster and his fantastic team, lead by site manager Mark Collins, worked around events and artists, often having to down tools for significant periods of time, to ensure access and recording was not disturbed. Recording studios and noisy building work are not known for sitting hand in hand, but our site teams have become used to unusual working conditions over the years. A greatly acclaimed Oxfordshire restaurant and hotel regularly asks us to work ‘nocturnally’ and within a carefully regulated decibel parameter; all great practice for Abbey Road!

BarrJoinery produced an array of bespoke cabinetry pieces at the Field Farm workshop. Items were spray finished ready for transportation with the fit and final finish on site. Commissions included display cabinets for historic memorabilia - a steel grey finish set off by flame red internals, colour matched to the scheme. Also storage cabinets with inset menu boards and integral lighting, functional infrastructure and wall mounted display cabinets, hung in an offset array on the brick tiled back bar.

Bespoke tables were produced with a varied tone oak herringbone top, mirroring the striking bar front. Each table has a copper trim and lead grey colour matched base. With 60’s style vintage chairs and red leather banquettes the look is totally unique and a true 1960’s retro feel.

Fiona Gillott, Abbey Road Studios Manager was really pleased with the work; “It is always hard for contractors to work here; where recording is concerned no noise really means no noise.  It was certainly the first refurbishment project in the 85-year history of Abbey Road Studios to run to time! We are really pleased with the results”.
