Clients in Putney came to us with their build specification after a glowing referral from friends in Oxford. A complete refurbishment with remodeling of the ground floor was required. The project raison d’etre’ was to highlight the original features of the property but also to bring in light and make it functionally set for modern living.
The three story Putney residence tells its own story. Fifteen beautiful sash windows adorn the building, setting its character from the outside and from within. It was to be an intricate renovation with lots of detailed elements. Replacing fifteen beautiful sash windows each with its own individual detailing was set to blow the project budget out of the water. The StuartBarrCDR solution was a full refurbishment and reconditioning of each window, followed by slim line glazing treatment by Slenderpane http://www.slenderpane.com. This assured the integrity of each window, as well as soundproofing, which vital in order to re-gain the aural serenity within.
Original features were either restored or replicated in order to ensure the relevant Victorian authenticity. Doors, fireplace, skirtings, shutters and fixings were all treated with consideration for the period of the property. Knocking through the living and dining rooms through, as seen in many Victorian property renovations, brings the light through and sets the space for modern living. In balance the installation of mod cons such as a ‘Nest’ heating control system and Sonos AV throughout the house fitted by Vision Control.
Bespoke bookshelves, wardrobes and cupboards offer individually specified storage as truly belonging to each room. The play room, now bright and airy, exhibits a full wall of built-in box shelves, keeping toys accessible but out of sight after bedtime. Likewise the shelved landing houses books galore, offering a wall of colour as one reaches the upper level.
Parquet flooring, from the Natural Wood Flooring Company, laid throughout the ground floor, adds a real ‘look of the moment’ and has the added comfort of underfloor heating beneath. In fact we were so inspired that we had a little showroom parquet floor ‘facial’ back at HQ, giving a new lease of life to our oak boards. Come and take a look on Saturday between 10 and 3, when our newly renovated showroom will be open waiting to inspire as part of the BarrGroup Live Home Show.
