In October, at the (virtual) Oxfordshire Apprentice Awards Ceremony, the Barr Group were announced as the winner of the Work Experience Employer 2020, sponsored by OxLEP Skills. For two decades young people have joined the Barr Group as apprentices and gone on to become valued skilled tradesmen and women, site managers and contracts managers within the company. The work experience program feeds that chain and links us to our local community and in doing so enriches the educational and work lives of all involved. Through offering work experience placements at the Barr Group we are able to help young people to get a better understanding of the world of work, which, we hope, will help them make informed life choices.
There are many individuals across the organisation and beyond who have contributed to making the Barr Group work experience program a positive experience for its young participants. A set of amazing mentors have dedicated their time to patiently guiding and encourage the young people who have come to us - thank you to you all (you know who you are!).
The program is run by Barr Group training co-ordinator Charlie Barr, without who’s careful scheduling and organising the program would not run smoothly (in fact it would not run at all!). It is her drive and enthusiasm which makes it a positive and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
We would like to say huge thank you to the careers team at Lord Williams's School who, each year, send us wonderful enthusiastic, engaged young people - many of whom have gone on to become apprentices here at the Barr Group. This year we are looking forward to working with the team at Lord Williams's School to deliver an online ‘work experience’ program which will give an insight into many roles within the organisation which support our frontline construction and manufacture.
Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Melanie Ringer and her team at OxLEP Skills for their ongoing support and for this endorsement of our efforts. OxLEP, as an organisation, supports not just the students and their careers advisors, but also the host companies like ourselves – we look forward to a continued mutually supportive relationship with OxLEP in the future.
