London Calling; Embracing the challenges of working in town.

Having worked on numerous London projects over the years, we have been asked by countless clients, architects and design collaborators for a dedicated London build service. Now with established teams, 2020 looks set to bring many more high-specification Capital renovations into the Barr Group mix.

London builds tend to come hand in hand with a different set of challenges to those of their countryside counterparts. Access and noise restrictions, as well as the general public and neighbour considerations, are all, of course, amplified when working in highly populated spaces. The Barr Group are certainly no strangers to working around busy commercial establishments and multi-resident buildings. Past London projects at the Groucho Club, Abbey Road Studios and Agency Brazil in Soho, to name but a few, came with some interesting site caveats.

The Groucho Club project was the refurbishment of the Absolut Vodka ‘Elyx’ terrace, where sound-absorbent cladding was required to reduce the noise of late-night revellers… and of course, maximum care was required during the works – so as not to disrupt the ambiance for daytime members.

Similarly, at Abbey Road Studios strict noise restrictions were in place for obvious reasons!  The team had to be prepared to down tools when recording was in progress – whilst at the same time sticking to strict timelines and an involved finishing schedule. Working with the Shaun Clarkson ID team, however, was certainly enough of a privilege to make any juggling worthwhile!

Even the residential London projects come with additional considerations. One recent example was working with Gunter and Co. on a Little Venice first floor apartment. Although detailed high-specification made to measure cabinetry played a major part, it was the renovation team that needed to tread softly. Walking a fine line between getting the job done and minimising disruption to neighbouring apartments, site standards were as important as work standards throughout.

As an organisation which embraces a challenge and thrives on finding new ways of doing things differently, bringing London builds into the mix makes perfect sense. Next to our current home counties' fusion of large-scale contemporary new builds, heritage projects and avant-garde extensions, expect to see even more lux townhouse renovations and prestigious apartment remodels.

Right now projects in Notting Hill, Wapping, Battersea and Chiswick are currently keeping the Barr London crews busy… with availability in the Spring for further challenging projects. If you would like to chat through your plans with us, please do get in touch.
