Awards season has seen some wonderful individual and company recognition for the BarrGroup. Barr Group Companies won the Apprenticeship Scheme of the Year award and Director Stuart Barr won the Oxfordshire Young Business Person of the Year Award. The events themselves put us in touch with even more amazing community work going on within the industry.
The Constructing Excellence Awards in London this month, at which StuartBarrCDR was nominated as finalist for the Young Achiever of the Year Award, provided one such example. Fellow finalist Angela Steel is MD of Opportunities with Experience, a social enterprise that strives to redress the gender balance in skilled trades within the industry through training and support.
Women currently women make up less than 3% of the construction industry workforce. In responce Angela has secured funding and set up an organisation which trains and supports women who want to work in the industry, offering young women from deprived areas access to opportunities in skilled trades. The Barr Group companies applaud Angela’s achievements and are in inspired to continue in their own efforts to support disadvantaged young people.
The same evening introduced us to The Construction Youth Trust, named charity of the event. Like Angela and our friends at Toolshed Bucks, the Trust helps young people in England and Wales to build better futures by giving them access to training, education and employment opportunities in the construction industry. They strive to inspire and support young people facing barriers as diverse as challenging financial circumstances, lack of awareness of opportunities, low self-esteem, gender or ethnic discrimination. They bring a passion for construction to educate, up skill, expand and empower. Working in partnership with community groups, local authorities, training providers, educators, young offender institutions and key industry employers the Construction Youth Trust delivers free courses that provide practical work experience as well as careers advice.
