On a rainy Saturday in mid-March, a raincoat cladded but undeterred Barr Group joined local architects and designers for the 6th annual RIBA Henley Design Day. Covering the wider area of Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, Henley Design Day is always a great opportunity to meet local experts in architecture, design and build, gather some inspiration and discuss current or pending projects.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) champions better buildings, communities and the environment, through the work of its members and by pioneering events like this one. The aim of the day is to bring together like-minded specialists and organisations, each offering excellence in their own particular field.
The Barr Group Team met many interesting home owners looking to renovate, extend and even build from scratch. We also managed to catch up with some previous ‘conspirators’ from exciting past projects. RPA Architects, also attending on Saturday, shared the challenge of ‘Upside’, an innovative and eco-friendly new build in South Oxfordshire.

ADAM architecture, with offices in Winchester and London, specialise in both traditional architecture and urban design. Image 2 shows just one example from a superbly impressive potfolio.
Also with us were Riach Architects. Based on the Banbury Road in Oxford, Riach has a project gallery that speaks a thousand words. Image 3 shows the finished product of one of their many great designs.
JW Architects, based in Beaconsfield and headed up by James Wheelan, also joined the HDD experts - image 4 shows a fabulous example of their work.
Over in Wallingford on the Oxfordshire / Berkshire border are Carroll and Partners, with a potfilio of both traditional and contemporary projects, image 5 shows an outstanding example in the latter category.

Image 7, from up and coming Fineline Architects, shows one of their current project local to Henley, in which brick columns and crittall glazing set a rhythm across the new section of the building.
This year Henley Design Day also showcased the work of local female architects. The architectural and construction industries have historically been male dominated arenas. A dedicated ‘Women in Architecture’ table, headed up by Zoe Smith, director of ZLA Ltd, Reading, offered a plethora of female architects and guest designers, available to talk through the ideas of potential clients and offer a unique approach to bringing a project to life.
Making our way home, umbrellas up, the Barr Group representatives felt enriched by the experience and excited about the great work going on in Berks, Bucks and the surrounding counties. As a design-focused company, it is events like these which are the life blood of our organisation.
