A privileged stake in the structural integrity of our great city

In their 90 years of operation the Oxford Preservation Trust have facilitated some truly outstanding work for the historic city of Oxford. The mission of the Oxford Preservation Trust (OPT) is to ensure that, as Oxford evolves, it should enjoy the best of the past and the best of the new.

For 40 of those years the minds and hands behind enhancement projects across the city have been celebrated through the Oxford Preservation Trust Awards. The 40th OPT Awards ceremony took place last week at the iconic 1960’s built St Catherine’s College, where architects, surveyors, estate managers, contractors and city officials alike were able to share in a celebration of the best of recent Oxford construction.

Excitingly this year’s awards applicants fulfilled the criteria perfectly with examples of contemporary modern architecture sitting side by side specialist heritage restoration projects. StuartBarr CDR were thrilled to have played principal contractor role for two of the plaque winning projects; the restoration of the Jesus College dining hall (Building Restoration winner) and the Rhodes House external access points (Small Projects winner). Also receiving a special mention for works on the Headington Old School House in conjunction with Thinking Buildings Architects.

StuartBarr CDR would like to thank both David Stevenson of Jesus College and Peter Anderson of Rhodes House, as well as Mike Sheppard and his team at Savills, Oxford (Jesus College architects/contracts administrator) and David Pendry of Pendry Architecture & Heritage Ltd (Rhodes House specialist architect) for their unstinting faith in us as principal contractor. We would also like to thank Harri-stone Masonry, who played a key role in the specialist stone work for both projects, as well as Cliveden Conservation, Swan Farm Studios and the BarrJoinery team, without who’s specialisms the Jesus College project would not have been possible. The Oxford Preservation Trust says “We are delighted that in this 40th anniversary year we continue to attract entries of the highest standard and quality, each making their own contribution to this great city of ours. The Panel have enjoyed visiting all of the projects leading to lively discussions in awarding the 7 plaques and 8 certificates across the categories of Building Conservation, New Buildings, Small Projects and the Landscape and the Environment. Huge congratulations to all of the award winners in this year’s OPT Awards.”

Stuart Barr, Director of the Barr Group companies says “‘Having always lived in and around Oxford, surrounded by its iconic architecture, it is a huge privilege to have a been involved in works to some of its wonderful buildings. Working hand in hand with industry partners, our teams have been able to play a part in restoring and adding to our city’s cultural integrity. Old and new, contemporary or traditional; these buildings will be here long after all of us.”
